Overview
LifeBond’s initial line of biosurgical products is comprised of surgical sealants and active hemostats which incorporate a proprietary adhesive formulation that mimics the biochemical cross-linking cascade of late stage blood coagulation. The adhesive sealant forms a network similar to the fibrin network of blood clots but has demonstrated adhesive strength even greater than that of blood-derived fibrin sealants. The superior adhesive properties of LifeBond sealant materials in a physiological environment have been demonstrated both in submerged lap shear adhesive tests on porcine skin and in burst pressure tests on wet porcine intestine.
LifeBond’s wound closure products have a number of advantages beyond excellent adhesive properties. Unlike available adhesive biological sealants, LifeBond sealant is inexpensive to produce, stable, and contains only biocompatible substances. Furthermore, it undergoes cross-linking independent of blood factors, ensuring reliable hemostasis even in the presence of anti-clotting factors. LifeBond’s sealant and absorbable hemostats maintain strong adhesion to tissue even over a period of several weeks in a physiological environment. LifeBond’s materials do not contain any recombinant substances or toxic chemical cross-linkers that would complicate their biocompatibility profile.
Though LifeBond’s sealants and active hemostats are appropriate for a wide range of surgical applications, the Company is developing specific medical adhesive, surgical sealant, and absorbable hemostat products with consideration for regulatory guidelines and market need.
